Structure, the perfil profesional, photo customs and length rules: the complete method for writing a currículum that convinces Spanish employers — and passes the ATS filters Spanish companies increasingly use.

The sections

The structure Spanish recruiters expect

Spanish recruiters report spending well under a minute on a first screening. Your currículum must instantly show who you are, what you can do and what you have achieved — in the order they scan.

Reverse-chronological order is the Spanish standard. These are the sections, in the expected sequence:

  • Datos personales Name, phone, professional email, city, and optionally LinkedIn. Your DNI number is not needed on a CV. Date of birth is increasingly omitted, and the fotografía is no longer the universal expectation it once was.
  • Perfil profesional Two to four lines under your name: your role, years of experience, sector and one quantified achievement. Rewrite it for each offer — a generic profile convinces nobody.
  • Experiencia profesional Job title, company, city, dates with month and year, and three to five achievement bullets per role. Open each bullet with an action verb and close with a number where you can.
  • Formación Highest qualification first: degree (grado), vocational training (FP), master's. Once you have experience, one or two lines suffice; graduates add relevant projects and notable grades.
  • Competencias Six to ten technical skills mirroring the advert's exact vocabulary: software, methodologies, machinery. Unproven soft skills ('proactive', 'responsible') are filler.
  • Idiomas Languages with a verifiable level — CEFR grades (B2, C1) or official certificates. In Spain's market, honest English levels matter more than inflated ones: many first interviews now switch to English without warning.

The profile

Writing a perfil profesional that gets read

The perfil profesional replaced the old 'objetivo' section. Where the objetivo declared what you wanted, the perfil states what you offer: identity, proof, intention.

A working formula: role and seniority + sector + one measurable result + what you are targeting. For example: 'Logistics coordinator with 6 years in food distribution. Cut delivery incidents by 28% across 4 warehouses. Looking to bring route-planning experience to a growing e-commerce operation.' Compare that with 'responsible person seeking personal development' — only one of them earns an interview.

Achievements

Turning duties into results

The most common weakness in Spanish currículums is describing obligations instead of outcomes. 'Attended to customers in-store' fills a line; 'Served 120+ customers daily and raised the store's Google rating from 4.1 to 4.6' wins a second look. Verb, task, number — in that order, every time.

Tailor the vocabulary to each oferta de empleo: if the advert says 'gestión de almacén', your bullet should say gestión de almacén — not a synonym. Spanish ATS platforms (InfoJobs' and TecEmpleo's filters, corporate systems like SAP SuccessFactors) rank by literal matches.

Formalities

Photo, Europass and other Spanish specifics

The photo question: traditional in Spain and still common, but no longer universal — international companies and many startups explicitly run photo-free processes. Rule of thumb: include a professional photo for traditional Spanish SMEs, skip it for multinationals and tech. Whichever you choose, a selfie or holiday crop costs more than it earns.

Europass remains requested in public-sector processes and some education contexts, where its uniform structure eases comparison. For private-sector applications, a conventional well-structured CV usually performs better than the Europass layout, which recruiters privately admit to skimming.

  • File format PDF, always — unless the form demands Word. Name the file professionally: 'CV-Ana-Garcia.pdf'. 'documento_final_DEFINITIVO3.pdf' is remembered for the wrong reason.
  • The 'carta de presentación' pairing Many Spanish offers still ask for a cover letter. Keep it to one page, match its evidence to the CV and never retell the CV in prose.

Practical example

Perfil profesional: before / after

The same candidate, presented twice. Only one version survives the first screening.

Profile opener (administration) — before / after

3 lines that decide the interview

BEFORE: Hard-working, responsible person with experience in administration looking for an opportunity to grow professionally in a serious company. AFTER: Administrative assistant with 5 years in law-firm back office. Processed 300+ invoices monthly with an error rate under 0.5%. Advanced in Excel and SAP Business One — seeking a coordinator role in professional services.

Role, sector, volume, accuracy, tools, target. The 'after' profile checks all six boxes; the 'before' checks none.

FAQ

Spanish CV questions

Should I include a photo on a Spanish CV?

It depends on the employer: traditional Spanish SMEs still expect a professional photo, while multinationals and tech companies increasingly prefer photo-free applications. Check the sector and the posting; never use a casual or cropped photo.

How many pages should my currículum have?

One page with little experience, two at most for experienced profiles. Quality of selection beats completeness — Spanish recruiters skim long CVs and remember only the first page.

Do I need to include my DNI (national ID)?

No. Personal identification numbers do not belong on a CV. Employers collect them at contract stage; adding them earlier only creates a data-protection risk.

Should I use the Europass format in Spain?

Only when it is requested — mainly public-sector calls and some education programmes. In the private sector a clean, conventional structure reads better and lets your strongest content lead.
