Cover letter examples you can actually send

These are complete letters, not Mad Libs. Each one is 250–400 words, names a real-looking achievement, and follows the four-paragraph shape recruiters in the US, UK and Ireland still expect: hook, evidence, fit, close.

Use them as a pattern. Then write yours in the free cover letter generator so the layout stays ATS-safe.

How to read them

The formula behind every example

Paragraph one names the role and one reason you fit. Paragraph two is a single result with a number. Paragraph three is why this employer, not any employer. The close asks for a conversation and stops.

Opening line

Before

“I am writing to express my interest in a challenging position at your esteemed organisation.”

After

“I am applying for the Backend Engineer role at Northwind. Your posting asks for someone who can keep a high-traffic API reliable while still shipping weekly.”

Why it works: The second version is searchable, specific, and already arguing. The first version could be sent to anyone.

Example

Software engineer cover letter

Dear Ms. Chen,

I am applying for the Backend Engineer role at Northwind. Your posting asks for someone who can keep a high-traffic API reliable while still shipping weekly — that is the work I have done for the last five years.

At Helio I owned the payments API that now handles about 12 million requests a day. We cut p95 latency from 420ms to 110ms by moving hot paths onto a read replica and adding request coalescing, which dropped timeout-related support tickets by roughly 40%.

I would welcome a conversation about how that reliability work maps to Northwind's checkout rewrite. Thank you for your time.

Why it works: Opens with the exact job title, one proof with scale, and a close that names the employer's project. No biography.

Example

Project manager cover letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing about the IT Project Manager opening on your careers page. I have spent eight years running software deliveries for regulated clients, most recently a 14-month EHR rollout for a 400-bed hospital.

That programme finished six weeks early against a fixed go-live date. The levers were a weekly risk log the clinical leads actually used, and a change-control board that met for 30 minutes rather than two hours.

I am based in Dublin and available from next month. I would be glad to walk through the rollout plan if it is useful.

Why it works: UK/Ireland tone: day-first availability, one programme, no photo mention, pairs with a CV not a resume.

Example

Career-change cover letter

Dear Mr. Patel,

I am applying for the Customer Success Manager role. For seven years I ran a 12-person retail operations team; I am moving into SaaS success because the work is the same — keep accounts healthy, surface product gaps, and stop churn before it starts.

In my last store cluster we held 94% year-on-year retention across 40 franchisees by introducing a 30-day onboarding checklist and a monthly usage review. Those are the same rituals your posting describes for enterprise seats.

I would like to discuss how that operations background transfers to your mid-market book. Thank you for considering the application.

Why it works: States the pivot in sentence one, then translates old metrics into the new job's language. Does not apologise.

Example

Graduate / no-experience cover letter

Dear Recruitment Team,

I am a final-year marketing student applying for the Junior Content Associate internship. I do not have a full-time marketing title yet; I do have three published campaigns and a 4-month content internship at a regional charity.

The internship produced a monthly email that grew from 1,200 to 4,800 subscribers, and a landing page that converted 11% of visitors into volunteer sign-ups. Both used the same brief-research-draft-edit loop your posting describes.

I can start from 15 June and am happy to share the campaign files. Thank you for reading.

Why it works: Leads with evidence instead of 'I am a hard-working student'. Dates and numbers do the work a job title would.

Questions

Cover letter example FAQ

How long should a cover letter example be?

Between 250 and 400 words, on one page. The examples on this page sit in that range. Anything longer is usually a resume restated as prose, which recruiters skip.

Can I copy these cover letter examples?

Copy the structure, not the sentences. Hiring teams notice recycled openings. Replace the company, the metric and the project with ones you can defend in an interview.

Do I need a different example for the UK or Europe?

The argument is the same; the frame changes. UK and Irish letters pair with a CV, use a day-first date and a more formal sign-off. US letters pair with a resume and a month-first date. Country-specific format lives on the generator's market pages.

Should a cover letter repeat the resume?

No. Pick one achievement the resume cannot fully explain, and connect it to one problem in the job ad. If the letter works with the company name removed, it is too generic.

Are these examples ATS-friendly?

Yes when you keep them as real text in a single column. Do not put the letter inside a table, a text box or an image. Export a text-based PDF from the generator rather than a scan.
