How to Write a French CV (Comment Faire un CV)

Structure, sections, length, the accroche: here is the complete method for writing a CV that French recruiters read to the end — and that French ATS software can parse correctly.

The sections

The CV structure French recruiters expect

French recruiters typically spend under a minute on a first read. Your structure has to answer three questions instantly: who you are, what you can do, and what you have already achieved.

Reverse-chronological order (most recent experience first) is the absolute norm in France. Here are the expected sections, in order:

  • Title and accroche A clear job title ('Qualified accountant', 'Full-stack developer') optionally followed by two lines of accroche: years of experience, specialism, one standout result. It is the most-read section of a French CV.
  • Personal information Name, phone, professional email, city, and optionally a LinkedIn link. Age, marital status and nationality are no longer expected — and the photo remains optional, never mandatory.
  • Expérience professionnelle For each role: job title, company, city, dates (month and year), then three to five result-oriented bullets. Each bullet opens with an action verb and ideally closes with a figure.
  • Formation Your highest qualification is enough once you have experience: title, institution, years. Recent graduates add honours (mentions), notable internships and significant projects.
  • Compétences Six to ten technical skills (software, languages, methods) using the exact vocabulary of the job advert. Unproven 'soft skills' such as 'dynamic and motivated' add nothing.
  • Languages and extras Languages with an honest level (fluent, B2, TOEIC 850). Driving licence if the job needs it, certifications, meaningful voluntary work — only what tells the recruiter something.

The accroche

Writing an accroche that earns the read

Placed just under the title, the accroche sums up your value for the targeted role in two lines. Rewrite it for every application: a universal accroche speaks to no one.

The formula that works

Professional identity + numbered proof + targeted intention. Example: 'Maintenance technician with 5 years in the pharmaceutical industry. Raised line availability from 91% to 97%. I want to bring that reliability to your Lyon site.' No empty adjectives — only facts.

What to banish: 'Looking for a stimulating position where I can grow.' That sentence is about your wishes; the recruiter is looking for their solution. The accroche must answer their need, not yours.

The experience section

Turning duties into achievements

The difference between an average CV and an interview-winning CV lives in the bullets under each role. 'Managed social media accounts' describes a task; 'Grew the Instagram community threefold in 14 months to 45,000 followers' tells an achievement.

Apply the verb + task + figure rule: action verb first (led, launched, cut, trained, negotiated), the mission in the middle, the measurable result at the end. And match your vocabulary to each advert: if the posting says 'project management', do not write 'site coordination' for the same reality.

The format

Layout, ATS and classic traps

In mid-size and large French companies your CV is often read by software (ATS) before a human. To pass that filter: a single column, standard section titles ('Expérience professionnelle', 'Formation'), a classic typeface, selectable text — never text in images or floating text boxes.

French recruiters cite the same eliminators year after year: spelling mistakes in the title, a frivolous email address, dates that contradict LinkedIn, unexplained gaps. Reading aloud once and cross-checking against your LinkedIn profile removes most of the risk.

  • The photo: the real picture The photo is not mandatory in France, and more employers now skip it to reduce bias. If you add one: professional quality, neutral background, framed at the shoulders. Never a holiday snap or a cropped party photo.
  • The problem of gaps Own an inactive period in one line: 'Gap year — web development training' or 'Parental leave'. Silence, by contrast, feeds every hypothesis.

The 'after' version says who she is, what she has proven and what she wants — in four lines, without a single self-assessment adjective.

Writing a French CV: common questions

Do I need a photo on a CV in France?

No, a photo is not mandatory and many recruiters now do without. If you add one, choose a recent professional photo on a neutral background — a poor photo damages you more than no photo at all.

One page or two?

One page for students, recent graduates and most profiles. Two pages are justified only from roughly ten years of experience — and only if every line carries real information.

Should I adapt my CV to each job offer?

Yes — it is the highest-return habit in a job search: reuse the exact job title from the advert, adjust the accroche and surface the requested skills. Ten minutes of tailoring measurably improves response rates, human and algorithmic.

Do I have to mention an unemployment period?

Yes, in one honest line: 'Training period — certification …' or 'Career break'. An invisible gap breeds suspicion; a named period stops the question.
