How to Write an Italian CV: Sections, Privacy Clause & Tips

Some parts of an Italian CV are unique — above all the GDPR privacy clause, without which many recruiters cannot legally shortlist you. This guide covers every section, the photo question and the mistakes that cost interviews in Italy.

The sections

The structure of an Italian CV

Italian recruiters scan a CV in under a minute and shortlist ruthlessly. A clear structure in reverse-chronological order — the national standard — decides whether your content is even read.

These are the sections an Italian CV needs, in order:

  • Dati personali Name, phone, professional email, city, optionally LinkedIn. Date and place of birth were once mandatory; today many candidates omit them, and employers must not require them. Include them only when a public-sector notice (bando) asks.
  • Profilo personale Two to four lines under your name: role, years of experience, sector, one measurable result. In Italy this section has largely replaced the older generic 'obiettivi'.
  • Esperienza professionale Job title, company, city, dates with month and year, then three to five bullets per role. Start each with an action verb; end with a number wherever one exists.
  • Istruzione e formazione Highest qualification first: laurea (degree) with final mark when strong (e.g. 110/110), diploma, certified courses. Once you have solid experience, keep this section to one or two lines.
  • Competenze Six to ten technical skills that mirror the advert's wording: software, machinery, certifications. Vague claims like 'good with people' carry no weight without proof.
  • Lingue and the privacy clause Languages with honest CEFR levels — then the legal line every Italian CV needs: consent to personal-data processing (detailed below).

The legal line

The GDPR privacy clause: mandatory in practice

This is the uniquely Italian detail. Under the GDPR (EU Regulation 2016/679), an employer needs your consent to process the personal data in your application. Without a consent line, many Italian recruiters — fearful of compliance risk — will simply not process your CV.

Add a line like this at the bottom: 'I authorise the processing of my personal data pursuant to EU Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) for the purposes of the recruitment process.' When the job posting quotes specific legislation or asks for consent 'including sensitive data', mirror its exact wording — some application portals check for it literally.

Form

Photo, Europass and formatting realities

The photo: genuinely optional, and the trend in Italy is towards leaving it off — especially for international companies, which often run photo-free screening. If a traditional Italian employer or agency asks for one, use a recent professional shot on a neutral background.

Europass: still requested in public competitions and by some staffing agencies, because its rigid structure makes candidates comparable. In the private sector it has a reputation problem — recruiters admit to skimming it. For most private applications, a clean conventional CV leads with your strongest content instead of a grid.

The content

From duties to results

The standard weakness of Italian CVs is the duty list under each role. 'Management of customer orders' tells a recruiter what the desk looked like; 'Processed 150 orders a week with an on-time delivery rate of 98%' tells them what you did at it. Verb, task, number — in every bullet that can carry one.

Match the advert's vocabulary: if the posting says 'gestione ordini', write 'gestione ordini'. Italian ATS filters — used increasingly by corporates and agencies — rank literal matches first, synonyms second.

Practical example

Profilo personale: before / after

The same candidate twice. One version gets shortlisted; the other does not.

Profile opener (accounting) — before / after

3 lines that decide the shortlist

BEFORE: Young graduate in economics, motivated and willing to learn, looking for a first experience in accounting where I can develop my skills. AFTER: Accounting clerk, laurea in Economics (108/110), 2 years' experience in a Milan accounting studio. Post 400+ journal entries monthly in TeamSystem; reconciled 60 client accounts. Targeting a junior controller role in industry.

'After' gives qualification, mark, environment, volume, tool and target. Motivation is demonstrated by the facts, not declared.

FAQ

Italian CV questions

Is the privacy clause really necessary?

In practice, yes. Under GDPR, employers need your consent to process application data, and many Italian recruiters will not advance a CV that lacks it. One line at the bottom closes the issue — mirror the posting's exact wording when it quotes legislation.

Should I include a photo on an Italian CV?

Optional, and declining: international employers often prefer photo-free CVs, while traditional firms and agencies may still expect one. Use a recent professional photo if you include it — or none at all. Never a cropped social picture.

Do I include my date of birth?

Increasingly candidates omit it, and employers may not require it for private roles. Include it only when a public-sector notice explicitly asks. It adds no advantage otherwise.

Europass or a classic format?

Europass only when the notice or agency demands it (common in public competitions). For private-sector applications, a conventional, well-structured CV reads better and lets your strongest content lead.
