Engineering resumes are not screened for adjectives — they are screened for evidence. A hiring manager wants to know what you built, at what scale, and what broke while you were building it. Everything else is decoration.

This guide covers the bullet formula that survives a technical screen, what to emphasise at each level from intern to staff, the keywords recruiters actually search for, and the layout choices that keep your GitHub and portfolio links clickable.

    Diagnosis

The four mistakes that get engineering resumes rejected

    MistakeWhat it looks likeThe fix
A list of technologies'Skills: Java, Python, Go, Rust, Kubernetes, Kafka, Terraform, ...'Group into languages / infrastructure / practices, and show each one doing a job in a bullet
Duties instead of outcomes'Responsible for backend services and code reviews'Lead with scale and effect: latency, throughput, cost, uptime, team velocity
No link to the workProjects described but nothing clickableAdd GitHub, a deployed demo or a case study — a repository is stronger proof than a paragraph
Framework name-dropping without depthEight frameworks listed, none defensible in an interviewThree you can design with beats eight you have imported once

    The core skill

The bullet formula that passes a technical screen

Impact and scale first, technology second, method last. Reversing that order is what makes an engineering resume read like a dependency manifest.

    Weak

Worked on the payments service using Node.js, PostgreSQL and Redis to improve performance.

    Stronger

Cut p95 checkout latency from 1.9s to 420ms for 40k daily transactions by adding a Redis read-through cache and batching Postgres writes.

Why: the strong version tells the reader what a user would have noticed, and only then what you used.

    Four patterns worth copying

Each one names a system, a magnitude and a mechanism.

Scaled the events pipeline from 3M to 120M messages per day without adding infrastructure, by switching from polling consumers to Kafka consumer groups.

Throughput + mechanism. Reads as an architecture decision, not a chore.

Reduced AWS spend 27% ($14k/month) by right-sizing ECS tasks and moving cold S3 objects to Glacier via lifecycle policies.

Cost impact is the most under-used metric on engineering resumes.

Raised test coverage from 41% to 86% on the billing module and cut production incidents 60% over two quarters.

Pairs a code metric with the business outcome it produced.

Led migration of 14 services to Kubernetes across 3 teams, with zero-downtime cutover and a shared Helm chart library adopted company-wide.

Senior-level framing: scope, coordination and a reusable artefact.

Numbers engineers are allowed to use

    • Latency and throughput: p50/p95/p99, requests per second, messages per day.
    • Reliability: uptime percentage, error rate, incident count, mean time to recovery.
    • Scale: users, records, endpoints, services, tenants, regions, data volume.
    • Efficiency: CI runtime, build size, cost per month, CPU or memory saved.
    • Team effects: review turnaround, onboarding time, deployment frequency.

    Levels

What to emphasise at every level

    Internship and new graduate

You have no professional scale to report, so report shipped work. Two or three deployed projects, one internship, and any open-source contribution beat a chronological list of coursework.

    Graduate-level bullets

Built and deployed a scheduling app used by 220 students across two departments; FastAPI, Postgres, Docker, deployed on Fly.io with GitHub Actions CI.

Real users is the single strongest signal available to a new graduate.

Contributed 11 merged pull requests to an open-source CLI, including a fix that cut startup time 30% for large config files.

Open source proves you can work inside someone else's codebase.

    Mid-level (2–5 years)

The question is now ownership. Show that you can be trusted with a service end to end: design, delivery, on-call and iteration.

    Mid-level bullets

Owned the notifications service (12M requests/day) including on-call; reduced alert noise 70% by replacing threshold alerts with SLO-based burn-rate alerts.

Ownership plus operational maturity — the two things that separate mid from junior.

Designed and shipped a multi-tenant permissions model used by 300+ enterprise accounts, cutting access-related support tickets by half.

Design work with an adoption and support-cost outcome.

    Senior (5–9 years)

Seniority is measured in decisions that other people depended on: architecture, standards, mentoring and cross-team delivery.

    Senior bullets

Led the split of a monolith into 6 services over 9 months with a 4-engineer team, keeping release cadence at 2 deploys/day throughout.

Scope, duration, team size, and the constraint you protected.

Introduced trunk-based development and automated release notes, lifting deploy frequency from weekly to daily and cutting 'release week' bugs 45%.

Process change with a measurable engineering outcome.

    Staff and principal

At this level the resume is about leverage: technical direction, platform economics, and the systems other engineers build on.

    • Name the org-wide artefact: an internal platform, a paved-road standard, an architecture review process.
    • Quantify second-order effects: teams onboarded, services migrated, incidents avoided, cost per transaction.
    • Show one long-horizon bet and its result — a two-year migration, a re-platforming, a build-vs-buy decision.

    Screening

Keywords recruiters and ATS actually search

Technical recruiting searches are literal and often Boolean. If the advert says "React.js", writing only "React" may still match — but writing "modern frontend frameworks" will not. Mirror the advert exactly, then let a bullet prove depth.

Common search strings by discipline (2026 postings)
    DisciplineFrequently searched strings
FrontendReact, React.js, Next.js, TypeScript, Redux, Tailwind, accessibility (WCAG), Core Web Vitals, Jest, Cypress
BackendNode.js, Python, Django, FastAPI, Go, Java, Spring Boot, REST, GraphQL, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka
Platform / DevOpsAWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, Docker, CI/CD, GitHub Actions, observability, Datadog, incident response
Data / MLSQL, Python, Spark, Airflow, dbt, Snowflake, BigQuery, PyTorch, model deployment, feature stores
Cross-cuttingSystem design, code review, mentoring, on-call, Agile, trunk-based development, microservices, security

    Proof

Projects, links and a portfolio that earns a click

    Project entry pattern

    Lumen — real-time analytics dashboard 2025 – Present
    TypeScript · Next.js · Postgres · WebSockets
    · 1,400 active users; streams 2M events/day with sub-second chart updates
    · Open source (1.2k stars), 42 external contributors, 96% test coverage
    live: lumen.example.com · github.com/you/lumen
    1. 1

Pick two or three projects, not seven

Choose the ones whose stack overlaps the job advert. A curated pair with depth reads far stronger than a catalogue of tutorials.

    2. 2

State the problem before the stack

One line on what it does and who uses it, then the numbers. 'A habit tracker' tells the reader nothing; 'a habit tracker with 3,000 weekly users and offline sync' does.

    3. 3

Link the live version first, the repository second

Deployed software is evidence; source code is potential evidence. If the app is behind a login, include a demo account in the README.

    4. 4

      Mention something that was hard

A note about conflict resolution, backpressure or a migration shows engineering judgement instead of tutorial-following.

    Formatting

Formatting and ATS: the engineering-specific rules

    ElementRecommendationWhy
Length1 page to ~5 years, 2 pages beyondSenior engineers with two dense pages read as experienced, not verbose
Skills blockTwo or three labelled lines placed under the summary for technical rolesKeyword filters and recruiters both land there first
LinksPlain URLs on their own line, not hidden behind 'portfolio'ATS extract the string; a hyperlinked word extracts as display text
Code samplesLink only — never paste code into the resumeCode blocks destroy parsing and waste a third of the page
CertificationsAWS, Azure, GCP and Kubernetes credentials with yearsVerified, searchable and directly relevant — see the certification guide
FormatSingle column, standard headings, text-based PDFThe parser converts your entire history into fields; tables and columns break it

The underlying rules are the same as for any field — the step-by-step ATS resume guide walks through them — but engineering resumes carry more keywords and more links than most, so parsing failures cost more.

    Before you send

Four things to check and four to cut before you apply

    Do

    • Numbers in at least two bullets per role
    • Exact stack strings copied from the job advert
    • GitHub or portfolio link on the contact line
    • The job title you want as your headline

    Don't

    • Skill bars, star ratings or logo grids
    • A wall of languages nobody can defend
    • Code snippets pasted into the document
    • The same resume sent to a backend and a frontend role

Then check it the way a parser will: run the resume and the job advert through the free ATS score checker to see which required keywords never made it into the document, and build the final version in the free ATS resume builder — no login, no watermark, unlimited PDF exports.

    Frequently asked questions

How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page up to about five years of experience, two pages for senior, staff and principal engineers. If you are a new graduate, keep it to one page and spend the space on two or three substantial projects instead of every university course you took.
Should I list programming languages I know a little?
No. List languages you can be interviewed on, and put them in tiers: 'Languages: TypeScript, Python, Go (daily); Rust, Kotlin (working knowledge)'. Interviewers pick the top of the list, so anything you would dread being asked about should not be on it.
Do side projects still matter on a resume?
Yes, especially without professional experience, and they matter most when they show the same things a job does: real users, deployments, tests, monitoring and a changelog. A deployed app with 500 users outweighs five abandoned tutorial repositories.
How do I show impact without access to company metrics?
Use defensible ranges and observable facts: team size, release cadence, requests per second, database size, incident reduction, review turnaround, onboarding time. 'Cut CI runtime roughly in half (48 → 25 minutes) for a 12-engineer team' is honest and specific even when exact revenue numbers are confidential.
Should a software engineer resume include a summary?
Yes, a short one: three lines stating your specialism, years of experience and one measurable strength, written for the role you are applying to. Recruiters searching a stack keyword often see only that summary in a search result; preview and ranking behavior depend on the employer's system.
