The line under your name is the most-read fourteen words on your resume. It is what a recruiter uses to decide which job you are applying for, and it is frequently what a keyword search matches against before anything else on the page.

This guide gives you the four-part headline formula, 30 examples across seniority levels and industries, the headlines that actively cost you interviews, and the exact place the line belongs in an ATS-friendly layout.

    The pattern

    The 4-part headline formula

A headline is a job title plus three qualifiers — and no adjectives
    PartWhat it holdsExample
    1. Target titleA target title that accurately describes the role you seekSenior Data Analyst
    2. SpecialismThe niche, industry or domain you work inE-commerce & Retail
    3. Tools / credentialsA few role-relevant tools or credentials you can supportSQL · Python · dbt · Power BI
    4. Proof (optional)One number that makes the rest credibleCut reporting time 70%
    • Build it with separators — pipes or centred dots — so the eye parses it in one pass: 'Senior Data Analyst | SQL · Python · Power BI | Cut reporting time 70%'.
    • Keep the line concise enough to scan easily; check how it wraps in the exported document.
    • Where accurate, use the role's familiar title or terminology. Job titles and search behavior vary, so do not claim a title or skill that misrepresents your experience.
    • If you name a soft skill, pair it with an example elsewhere in the resume when possible.

    Headlines by seniority

    Entry level and graduate

No years to claim, so lead with the degree, the tools and the evidence instead.

Computer Science Graduate (First Class) | React · Node · PostgreSQL | 3 Deployed Projects

Degree + stack + shipped count. The count is what makes it read as experience.

Junior Data Analyst | SQL · Excel · Power BI | 3 Dashboards Covering 1.2M Rows

For a first analyst role, the dataset size signals real practice.

Marketing Assistant | Content & Social | Grew an Account from 1.1k to 14k Followers

One number converts 'assistant' into 'someone who has produced results'.

Registered Nurse (NMC Registered) | Acute Cardiac Care | 6 Years NHS

For regulated professions, put the registration first — it is the screening criterion.

    Mid-level (3–8 years)

    Senior Data Analyst | E-commerce & Retail | SQL · Python · dbt · Power BI | Cut Reporting Time 70%

The four-part formula in full: title, domain, stack, proof.

    Customer Success Manager | B2B SaaS | 34 Accounts · 94% Retention | Salesforce & Zendesk

Portfolio size and retention rate are the two metrics CS hiring managers scan for.

    Operations Manager | Multi-Site Logistics | 45 Staff · 3 Distribution Centres

For operations roles, scale is the headline fact.

    Backend Engineer | Python · Go · AWS | Payments at 40k Transactions/Day

Domain plus volume tells a hiring manager exactly what kind of engineer you are.

    Content Marketing Manager | B2B Tech | Grew Organic Sessions 40k → 210k

Arrow notation is compact and instantly legible.

    Management Accountant | ACA | £60M Division · 6-Day Month-End Close

Qualification abbreviation plus the metric finance leaders scrutinise.

    Senior and leadership

    Head of Finance | Manufacturing & FMCG | £42M Revenue · 9-Person Team · NetSuite

Executive headlines are budgets and teams, not tools.

    Director of Engineering | Platform & Infrastructure | Grew Team 8 → 34 · 99.98% Uptime

Growth and reliability: the two numbers boards understand.

    Head of Operations | 3PL & Fulfilment | 220 Staff · 4 Sites · Cut Cost per Order 19%

Headcount, footprint, and one sustained efficiency win.

Sales Director | Enterprise SaaS | £6.2M ARR · Teams of 12 Reps Across EMEA

Revenue owned plus team scope — the pair that signals director-level trust.

    Interim Finance Director | Turnaround & Restructuring | 6 Assignments · £14M–£80M Turnover

For interim work, the number of assignments is the credibility signal.

    Library

    Headlines by industry and situation

    Technical and engineering

    Site Reliability Engineer | Kubernetes · Terraform · Prometheus | 99.98% Uptime at 12M Requests/Day

Reliability engineers should lead with uptime at a stated scale.

    Mechanical Design Engineer | SolidWorks · GD&T · Injection Moulding | 30+ Production Parts

Specific methods beat 'CAD experience' every time.

    QA Engineer | Playwright · Selenium · CI/CD | Cut Regression Testing 3 Days → 90 Minutes

The before/after notation communicates value instantly.

DevOps Engineer | AWS Certified Solutions Architect | Cut Cloud Spend 27%

Certification plus a financial outcome is a strong combination.

    Healthcare, education and public sector

Registered Nurse | Acute Cardiac Care | NMC Registered | 6 Years NHS

Registration status belongs in the headline in every regulated clinical role.

    Secondary Maths Teacher | KS3–KS5 | QTS | Raised GCSE Pass Rate 61% → 88%

    Qualification status plus attainment change.

Social Worker | Children & Families | Social Work England Registered | 8 Years

Regulator name acts as a keyword for both screening and verification.

    Project Manager | Public Sector Infrastructure | PRINCE2 · £14M Portfolio

    Sector plus methodology plus budget.

    Career changers, returners and students

Customer Success Manager | Moving from Retail Operations | 93% Account Retention

State the pivot in the headline; otherwise the reader assumes a mismatch.

Data Analyst | Former Laboratory Scientist | SQL · Python · 1.2M-Row Dashboards

The old field becomes the differentiator rather than a liability.

Marketing Manager | Returning After Career Break | Grew Organic Traffic 12k → 74k

Name the break briefly, then immediately assert capability.

Logistics Coordinator | 8 Years Military Logistics | 120-Person Unit · SC Cleared

Civilian scope plus clearance status — the two things defence-adjacent employers screen for.

Business Analytics Graduate | Power BI · SQL · Google Certified | 3 Dashboard Projects

Graduate headlines should read as a stack plus evidence, not a wish.

    Clean-up

Headlines that cost you the skim

    Weak

Hard-Working Professional | Team Player | Excellent Communication Skills

    Stronger

Operations Supervisor | FMCG Distribution | 22 Staff · 12,000 Weekly Orders at 99.97% Accuracy

Why: the rewrite replaces self-assessment with observable facts.

    Weak

Chief Happiness Officer | Growth Ninja | Disruptive Thinker

    Stronger

    Customer Experience Manager | B2B SaaS | Raised CSAT 82% → 91% Across 12 Agents

Why: creative job titles mean nothing outside your current employer.

    HeadlineWhy it failsReplace with
'Seeking new opportunities'States your situation, not your value — and wastes the most-read lineYour target job title plus one proof point
'Experienced Professional'No title, no domain, no keyword — unsearchable and uninformativeTitle, specialism, tools
'Recent Graduate'Every graduate is recent; the line could describe anyoneDegree + stack + shipped projects
'Multilingual Dynamic Leader'Adjectives without evidence read as paddingTitle + industry + the metric that proves leadership
'Available Immediately'Belongs in the contact area or cover letter, not the headlineTitle + specialism + tools

    Do

    • Use the advert's exact job title
    • Include two or three searchable tools or credentials
    • Add one number if it fits without wrapping
    • Keep it under 12 words

    Don't

    • Use adjectives as the main content
    • Invent a creative job title
    • Repeat your name or contact details
    • Let it wrap onto a second line on a printed page

    Formatting

Where the headline goes, and how to style it

    1. 1

      Directly under your name

Name (14–16pt, bold), then the headline (11–12pt, semibold or in a single accent colour). Contact details can sit above or below, but the headline must not be separated from the name.

    2. 2

One line, centred or left-aligned with the rest

Either works; consistency with the body matters more than the alignment itself.

    3. 3

      Keep the separators consistent

If you use pipes between title and specialism, use pipes throughout. Mixed separators make a careful resume look careless.

    4. 4

Check it survives the copy-paste test

Export your PDF, select all, paste into a plain text editor. Your name and headline should be the first two lines — if a graphic or text box has swallowed them, a parser will lose them too.

    • Do not put the headline in a text box or a coloured banner shape — those containers are exactly what parsers drop.
    • Avoid all-caps for the whole headline; it reduces readability and can confuse extraction of the job title.
    • If your headline is long, move the proof point down into the summary instead of squeezing the line.

    Do it now

Write your headline in two minutes

    1. 1

Copy the job title from the advert

Verbatim, including the level word — 'Senior', 'Lead', 'Junior'. That is part one.

    2. 2

      Add your specialism

Industry, domain, or the slice of the work you are strongest in.

    3. 3

Add two or three tools or credentials

The ones the advert names, with the exact strings it uses.

    4. 4

Add the strongest number you can fit

If nothing fits without wrapping, drop this part — the other three quarters carry the line.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a resume headline and a summary?
The headline is one line placed directly under your name; the summary is a short paragraph a few lines below it. The headline exists to be scanned and matched against a job title, the summary to be read as an argument. Together they form the top third of the page recruiters spend most of their time on.
Where exactly does a resume headline go?
Immediately below your name, above your contact details or directly under them, and above the summary. It should be at least 12pt and can be set in semibold — it is the only line besides your name that is allowed to be visually dominant.
Should a graduate use a headline?
Yes, and it is more important than for experienced candidates because the reader has no job history to infer from. Use 'Degree / Field | Core Skills | Evidence', for example 'Business Analytics Graduate | Excel, SQL, Power BI | 3 Dashboard Projects'.
Can a headline include a soft skill?
Only if it is qualified by evidence, and it belongs last. 'Customer Success Manager | SaaS Renewals | 96% Retention' works; 'Friendly Team Player' does not, because every applicant claims it and no reader believes it.
Do recruiter searches really match the headline?
Often, yes. Boolean searches for job titles, tools and certifications run across the whole document, and a headline immediately below the name is heavily weighted by both ranking algorithms and human attention. This is why the exact job title from the advert should appear there verbatim.
