A duty describes what your job required. An achievement describes what changed because you were in it. Almost every weak resume is weak for the same reason: it lists the first kind and calls it the second.

Below are 36 quantified achievement examples across twelve functions, the four-part formula they all follow, and — the part most guides skip — how to find defensible numbers when your employer publishes none.

    The pattern

The four parts of a quantified achievement

Miss any one of these and the line reverts to a duty
    PartQuestion it answersExample fragment
    VerbWhat did you do?Cut
    ObjectTo what?invoice processing time
    ResultBy how much?from 9 days to 3
MethodHow do we know it was you?by automating approvals in NetSuite

Assembled: Cut invoice processing time from 9 days to 3 by automating the approval chain in NetSuite. The method clause is what makes the claim verifiable — and what gives the interviewer something specific to ask about.

    Weak

Responsible for managing the accounts payable process and improving efficiency.

    Stronger

Cut invoice processing from 9 days to 3 across 1,800 monthly invoices by automating approval chains in NetSuite, freeing 1.5 FTE of admin time.

Why: the same job, described as a duty and then as a result.

    Numbers

Twelve metrics you can use without company data access

"I don't have access to the numbers" is the most common reason people give for writing duties. In practice, most of these are visible from inside your job and are safe to publish.

    Sales, marketing and customer-facing achievements

    Sales and account management

Closed £2.4M in new ARR in FY2026 at 118% of quota, including the two largest enterprise logos in the region.

Attainment plus the standout deal is the strongest sales bullet available.

Lifted average deal size 27% by introducing a discovery framework that qualified out low-fit deals earlier.

Process change with a commercial outcome.

    Recovered 14 at-risk accounts worth $680k ARR through a 90-day re-onboarding programme.

Retention and recovery are achievements even when growth is flat.

Cut sales-cycle length from 74 to 52 days by standardising proposal templates and legal pre-approvals.

Speed is a legitimate, quantifiable achievement.

    Marketing and content

Grew organic sessions from 40k to 210k monthly in 24 months with a topic-cluster programme covering 180 articles.

Volume of work plus the outcome — this is how you make content marketing measurable.

Reduced cost per acquisition 34% while scaling conversions 2.6x across £1.2M of annual ad spend.

Efficiency change at scale is the metric performance marketers are hired on.

Grew email list from 8k to 61k subscribers with a lead-magnet programme that converted at 12% against a 4% benchmark.

Benchmark comparison makes the number meaningful.

Rebuilt the event programme around three flagship events instead of eleven small ones, cutting cost 41% while lifting registrations 22%.

Fewer, better, measurable — a classic senior marketing achievement.

    Customer support and success

Raised CSAT from 82% to 91% across 12 agents handling 3,000 tickets a month by introducing tiered triage and a response-template library.

Team scope, volume, result and method in one line.

Cut average first-response time from 6h 12m to 38 minutes by rebalancing shift coverage to the ticket arrival curve.

Operational analytics work expressed as a customer-facing metric.

Deflected 31% of inbound tickets (roughly 900 a month) by publishing a self-service knowledge base of 120 articles.

Deflection rate is the clearest ROI number in support.

Maintained 94% gross retention on a $1.8M book through two pricing changes and a platform migration.

Holding retention through disruption is stronger than growing in calm.

    Engineering, data and operations achievements

    Engineering and data

Cut p95 checkout latency from 1.9s to 420ms for 40k daily transactions by adding a read-through cache and batching database writes.

Latency plus volume plus mechanism — the standard shape for backend work.

Reduced AWS spend 27% ($14k/month) by right-sizing ECS tasks and moving cold objects to Glacier via lifecycle policies.

Cost achievements are under-used and highly credible.

Raised test coverage from 41% to 86% on the billing module and cut production incidents 60% over two quarters.

Pairs a code metric with the business consequence.

Built a Playwright suite covering 640 scenarios that cut regression testing from three days to 90 minutes and caught 47 defects pre-release.

    Before/after plus absolute volume.

Replaced 14 manual spreadsheets with one automated dashboard, saving the merchandising team about 20 hours a month.

Time saved is the most transferable analyst achievement there is.

Improved demand forecast accuracy 22% across 400 SKUs by switching to a rolling 12-week model in Python.

    Accuracy improvement with scope.

    Operations, logistics and manufacturing

Cut order-to-dispatch time 32% across three distribution centres by rebuilding pick-and-pack routing in the WMS.

Multi-site scope plus a process cause.

Reduced shrinkage from 1.1% to 0.4% in 18 months through daily stock audits and a loss-prevention coaching routine.

Sustained percentage improvement with a named method.

Maintained 99.97% picking accuracy across 12,000 weekly orders during two consecutive peak seasons.

Consistency under pressure counts as an achievement.

Cut overtime costs 18% by re-planning shift patterns against the forecast volume curve, with no reduction in output.

Savings that did not cost output — that qualification matters.

Reduced unplanned machine downtime 41% by introducing a preventive maintenance schedule across 14 production lines.

Manufacturing: downtime percentage is the metric that gets attention.

Cut packaging material cost 12% (£38k annually) by re-specifying carton sizes across the top 20 SKUs.

A small, specific engineering change with a real annual figure.

Finance, HR, admin and healthcare achievements

    Finance and accounting

Reduced month-end close from 11 days to 6 by re-platforming reporting onto NetSuite and standardising 40 cost-centre templates.

The close-cycle metric is the standard finance benchmark.

Recovered £96k in aged debt in six months by introducing a graduated collections sequence and weekly AR reviews.

Recovery work has a natural number — use it.

Automated 30 recurring reconciliations in Excel and Power Query, saving roughly 25 hours a month across the team.

Time saved across a team, not just yourself.

Identified and eliminated £42k of duplicate SaaS subscriptions during an annual vendor review.

Cost avoidance is an achievement even without revenue impact.

    HR, recruiting and L&D

Cut average time-to-hire from 48 to 29 days by rebuilding the interview loop and introducing structured scorecards.

Time-to-hire is the metric HR leaders are judged on.

Raised 90-day new-hire retention from 78% to 93% with a structured onboarding programme across 60 hires.

Retention with a defined window and cohort size.

Delivered 14 manager-training workshops to 120 participants with a 4.7/5 average rating and 82% completion.

Volume, reach and satisfaction — training achievements need all three.

Reduced policy-related employee queries 40% by publishing a self-service knowledge base of 85 articles.

Deflection metrics work in HR exactly as they do in support.

    Administration, education and healthcare

Cut travel-and-expense approval time from 9 days to 2 by redesigning the workflow and writing the finance team's first process guide.

Administrative achievements are real when they are timed.

Raised GCSE maths pass rates from 61% to 88% in three years by rebuilding the intervention schedule for 180 students.

Education: attainment change with the cohort size.

Reduced patient handover errors 38% across four wards by standardising the SBAR process and coaching 25 colleagues.

Safety metrics carry more weight than any adjective in clinical settings.

Halved missed-appointment rates from 14% to 7% by introducing reminder calls and a rebooking protocol across two clinics.

Operational healthcare metrics are visible, measurable and impressive.

    Do it now

Convert your resume from duties to achievements

    1. 1

      Mark every duty bullet

Print the resume and put a dot beside each line that starts with 'Responsible for', 'Managed', 'Helped' or 'Worked on'. Those are your rewrite targets.

    2. 2

For each one, ask three questions

What changed? By how much? How do I know? If you cannot answer the third one, find the source — a report, a ticket count, a before/after screenshot, a calendar.

    3. 3

Rebuild with verb + object + result + method

Keep the strongest three to five per role. Fewer, sharper bullets read as more senior than a dense list.

    4. 4

      Sanity-check the claims

Every number must be one you could defend in an interview, with the measurement basis ready if asked. Approximations are fine when labelled.

    Do

    • Lead each bullet with the outcome when the number is the impressive part
    • Use ranges and 'roughly' when you are estimating
    • Keep numbers attached to a method or context
    • Vary metrics across a role: speed, quality, cost, scale

    Don't

    • Quantify every single bullet — it reads as manufactured
    • Use percentages with no base ('improved 40%' of what?)
    • Claim credit for team outcomes alone
    • Include a metric you cannot explain if questioned

    Placement

Where achievements belong on the page

    • Your current role gets three to five achievement bullets, ordered strongest first — this is the section recruiters read most closely.
    • Earlier roles get two or three. Roles older than ten years can shrink to a single line.
    • One achievement belongs in the summary as well, restated in shorter form, because the summary is often the only text a keyword search returns.
    • For early-career candidates, projects carry achievement bullets just as effectively — see 20+ resume project examples.
    • If a role has nothing measurable, compress it instead of padding it: one honest line leaves room for the evidence that matters. The bullet point library shows the phrasing for both cases.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I quantify achievements when I do not have access to data?
Use the numbers you can observe honestly: how many people, how often, how large, how fast, how much cheaper, how many errors. Team size, ticket volume, stores covered, reports automated, days saved and percentage improvements are all legitimate. Approximations signalled with 'roughly' or 'about' are far better than no numbers at all.
How many achievement bullets should each job have?
Give the most relevant roles enough space to explain your contributions. Older or less relevant roles can be shorter; keep details that help explain your experience and omit repetition.
What is the difference between an achievement and a responsibility?
A responsibility is what you were assigned; an achievement is what changed because you did it. 'Responsible for the monthly close' is a duty. 'Closed the month in 4 days instead of 7 across 2 years, enabling same-week board reporting' is an achievement. Replace duties with achievements one bullet at a time, starting with your current role.
Can achievements be teamwork rather than personal?
Yes, as long as your contribution is clear. 'Contributed the pricing analysis that supported a $1.2M contract win with a cross-functional team of six' is honest and still impressive. Never claim sole credit for team outcomes — recruiters verify during interviews.
    Should every bullet be quantified?
Aim for the majority, not all. A resume where every line ends in a percentage reads as manufactured. Mix quantified results with specific qualitative wins such as a new process, a migration, a hire you grew, or a certification you introduced to the team.
